Hawaii Lahaina Project
Rebuilding Hawaii - A Home for All
Providing Disaster Relief and Workforce Housing
Homes 4 the Homeless is on a mission to make a difference in Hawaii, a state grappling with a severe housing crisis. As the CEO of Homes 4 the Homeless, my personal connection to this cause runs deep, having survived the Tubbs fire in 2017, which inspired the creation of our organization. Additionally, my wife’s roots on Maui keep us closely tied to the islands. With our recent partnership with VESSEL, we’re armed and ready to provide disaster relief housing and permanent solutions.
Housing Costs in Hawaii: A Crisis Unfolds
The Most Expensive Housing in the Nation
- Hawaii’s housing crisis has reached emergency levels, with the highest median home prices and cost of living in the United States.
- The median price for a single-family home is $850,000, while condos average $600,000.
- Housing costs in Hawaii are 2.7 times the national average.
- The annual income required to afford a median-priced home is $252,000.
- Many professions, including firefighters, teachers, and nurses, struggle to afford housing.
- Native Hawaiians, in particular, face a disproportionate lack of affordable housing, with a higher likelihood of homelessness.
Hawaii Fires: The Spark of Urgency
The Recent Disaster that Shook Hawaii
- On August 8, 2023, a devastating fire hit Lahaina, Maui, leading to a state of emergency.
- Hawaii’s stringent regulations add significant costs and time to housing construction.
- We’re working to expedite housing placement in line with the governor’s proclamation.
Building a Better Hawaii: Our Commitment
- Hawaii needs 10,000 new housing units every year, but the current rate falls far short.
- Homes 4 the Homeless is dedicated to addressing this extreme crisis.
- The recent fire disaster has further heightened the urgency of our mission.
